Thursday 5th Chilli Sowings

So for the third evening on the trot, I sowed another batch of 2 seeds each of 8 more chilli varieties.
They were: Bangalore Whippets Tale, Guntur Sannam, Teja Rare Indian, Habanero Giant White, Gelbe Kirschen, Ohnivec, Orange Jalapeno and Pasilla Bajio.

I grew the Ohnivec and Pasilla Bajio last year and was impressed with the Ohnivec both in terms of appearance and in terms of produce.
Pasilla Bajio is an old favourite of mine and I will grow a few more of these hopefully.

Here's a tip if you want to have less pain trying to germinate your chilli seeds. 

Make yourself a cup of tea and with the used t-bag make another and leave the t-bag soaking until you have drunk the cuppa you've just made and discard the bag.
Leave the weak tea until its cooled down before you use the tea solution you have just made.
Soak your chilli seeds in the tea solution for 24hrs.
Place 2 pieces of kitchen roll that have been folded into a quarter in a plastic bag/sandwich bag/freezer bag basically something you can Seal airtight and wet the kitchen roll so its as wet as a wrung-out sponge.
Place the chilli seeds in the plastic bag on the wet kitchen roll and inflate and then seal.
Place in an airing cupboard or propagator or on top of a warm not hot radiator.
Check the seeds every two days and dampen the paper if it starts to dry out.
Once the seeds have sprouted you can transfer into 75mm pots.

The reason why you use the tea is because chilli seeds have a hard outer coating and the tanin in the tea helps to scarify the seed coating and make it germinate easier.
The hot varieties of chilli can be tricky to germinate at times and will benefit with a germination temperature of between 80°F and 89°F, also do not leave your chilli plant on a window sill over night as temperatures can drop and it will not do your plant any good.

First Chilli Sowing 2017 - Jan 3rd

First Chilli Sowing of 2017

Took the plunge and started on my first chilli sowings of 2017 today. I sowed the following varities. Akhabar, Act Sivri, Black Naga, Bulgarian Carrot, Fish Chilli, Guindilla, Long Green Buddha and Tri-Colour Variegata. All sown in the "Lighted Propagator" at a setting of 25 degrees...

Akhabar- 2 seeds sown on Jan 3rd

Chilli Overwintering Update

Picked some Red Manzano chillies tonight!! Scrapped the plants with bad greenfly and sprayed down some others I want to keep...

At this stage I still have:

Inside the House> 3 Purple Jalapeños with lots of leaves on them,  2 Orange Habanero, a Red Manzano (some fruit still on!!), a Lemon Drop and a Hot Scotch

A number of others are still alive out in the greenhouses.I am rather neglecting those though...

 First is a Lemon Drop that I've left quite straggly!! Plenty of branches for growth and all looks quite green still

Next is a Hotscotch that has a few leaves that are not looking too well, so we will see what happens......

This is the Red Manzano and as you can see it still has fruit on it!! Hopefully, this makes it through to 2017 growing!!

Below is 2 (of 3) of the Purple Jalapeno that I kind of just left at it as they were still producing some chillies in November,  Will clip them back a bit and see what happens...

Below are 2 Orange Habanero that are still thriving and that I might not even clip back at this stage..Still have flowers here and there despite me pulling a load of them today...
